Large Black Pigs Rhubarb and Custard where our very first foray into the traditional breeds. The large black is on the at risk register. A slow growing pig which is ideal for pork when young and will grow onto make the Rolls Royce in bacon. The pigs have lop ears and a very docile temprement. Although Custard ended up being put down due to arthritis, it can happen to us all, Rhubard is still going strong and producing 2 litters of about 10 piglets a year. Large Blacks are great at clearing ground from weeds as the systematically plough to find the worms and roots. At Well Manor we regularly run them through the overgrown hedgerows before planting the new hedging.
