Gotland Sheep are originally form the Isle of Gotland in Sweden. Gotlands have fantastic thick lustrous silvery grey fleece a neat black head with long legs, ideal for jumping straight out of the field! The Gotland mums are fantastic bearing mainly twins with the odd single and triplet. Gotland lambs are born looking like minature bambis, all leg! Gotlands are friendly and intelligent, apart from their fleece they give a brillant sheepskin,or furskin and excellent lean meat. We love the Gotlands and find they are great browsers ideal for our conservation areas as they love lots of variety in their diet.
Our latest introduction to the farm is our Shetland flock. Shetlands as the name suggests come for the Isle of Shetland and they have the softest fleece of our native breeds. The Shetland are smaller in size than the Gotland sheep but make up for it with their huge personalities. The Shetland sheep are regularly used by the Wildlife Trust to graze areas of conservation importance, and therefore ideally sit within our plans for Well Manor farm.
We have been developing our fibre offering by crossing our Gotlands with Shetlands. The Gotland cross produce a soft highly crimped fibre with a longer staple than is normal for shetlands. Spinners love it. |
